People Understanding Pets

How It All Began

We were fortunate to receive an anonymous donation to start an educational program in 2021 piloted by board member and Humane Educator Kim Schwalbach and her trusty rescue dog Lady Mary. We are happy to announce that the program has been a success and will continue again in 2022-2023! During the 2021-2022 academic year, Kim traveled the Macon County speaking to students of all ages ranging from pre-school to college about humane education.

During a PUPS visit, grade schoolers are read and given the book The Stray Dog

A Message from Kim Schwalbach, Humane Educator:

PUPS, people understanding pets, is so excited to return with our program to the students of Macon County. I feel that Lady and I have learned so much from our first year . We have presented to all ages and abilities, from preschool to Millikin. And every time we presented we learned more.

Giving simple humane education is so heart warming. The basic education of water, food ,shelter and love is appropriate for all pets and people. We emphasize kindness, never, ever hitting or hurting any living thing, to care and show compassion for all creatures. Pairing the message with reading and giving a book to each class reinforces our humane message.

I feel that Lady Mary is a wonderful canine friend for the children to learn to pet and show affection.

Please email me at pupsdecatur@gmail.com to arrange a visit soon.

Thanks so much to Decatur Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation for this opportunity.
